LaserDynamics ("the company") owns U.S. patent No. 5,587,981 ("the '981 Patent"), which was issued in 1996. The inventor, Mr. Kamatani, founded the company in 1998, and assigned the '981 Patent to the company. The '981 Patent is a method to automatically identify the type of optical disc inserted into a optical disc drive ("ODD") as a CD (compact disc) or DVD (digital video disc).
